Ucraina - trenuri Aron

Ukrzaliznytsia, the Ukrainian Railways, will  reconstruct and overhaul 400 km of tracks and to upgrade 800 km of lines by the end of this year.

The Ukrainian rail company intends to invest UAH 9 billion (EUR 271.75 million) for repair and modernisation of the rail infrastructure.

In addition, 455 turnouts will be reconstructed and overhauled and 600 units will be renovated by performing medium repairs.

“We have carefully analysed the status of the entire railway infrastructure. The main work will focus on problem areas with heavy traffic. After the works are completed, the current speed limits will be abolished, the maximum capacity for freight trains and the maximum expected speed for passenger trains will be implemented,” Ivan Yuryk, the acting chairman of Ukrainian Railways said.

Track works will be performed on at least seven rail sections:

Darnytsia – Hrebinka

Kyiv – Fastiv – Zhmerynka – Vapnyarka – Odessa

Znamyanka – Odessa

Myronivka – Pyatihatky – Chaplyne

Kozyatyn – Shepetivka – Zdolbuniv

Kryvyi Rih – Komysh-Zorya – Volnovakha – Mariupol

Lviv – Stryy – Chop.

Ukrzaliznytsia is also launch two large-scale infrastructure projects involving the electrification of Dolynska – Mykolaiv – Kolosivka and Kovel – Izov – Derzhkordon (to the state border with Poland) rail routes. The electrification of Kovel – Izov – Derzhkordon involves 94 km which will allow the company to increase the export traffic and the volume of cargoes by train from 4.6 thousand tonnes to 6 thousand tonnes. This will reduce the transport costs and will have a positive impact on company’s economic situation, bringing UAH 105 million (EUR 3.17 million).

Regarding the electrification of the railway line Dolynska – Mykolayiv line, in the coming months the tender committee will announce the contractor, and in the third quarter of 2021 it is planned to begin the work to implement the first phase of the project. The tender was announced Ukrzaliznytsia, opean Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The project will be financed by the EBRD and the EIB for a total amount of EUR 366 million including VAT.

Dolynska – Mykolayiv railway line is part of the Trans-European Transport Network and its electrification and modernisation will allow Ukrzaliznytsia to increase its capacity to export grain, ore, fuel and other products, to Mykolayiv port at Yuzhniy Bug river. The port joins the sea via the Bug-Dnepr Lmanskiy Canal passing through the Dnepro-Bugskiy estuary and Yuzhniy Bug River. The electrification will reduce the transport costs and will increase the capacity along the route, while reducing the impact on the environment.

Re: Ucraina - trenuri PTMZ

Ukrainian Railways, Ukrzaliznytsia, has started the implementation of two projects which covers the electrification works to reduce the costs and train emissions.

On August 6, 2021, the company has announced the ongoing progress on the electrification of Cherkasy – Taras Shevchenko rail line which has received a UAH 72.8 million (EUR 2.3 million) state budget to start the project. “The development of design and documentation is currently underway, and after the examination the active phase of works will start,” Ivan Yuryk, the Acting Chairman of the Management Board of Ukrainian Railways said.

The company plans to complete the electrification of the 40 km rail section in the first quarter of 2022. 34 km of tracks and two other stations are operational on the section between Cherkasy, a city in central Ukraine, and Taras Shevchenko. All four stations that serve the rail connection were commissioned in 1876.

The line ensures the suburban traffic and is also used by national trains linking Kyiv, Odessa and Lviv. In September 2020, Ukrainian Railways has put into service a new and modern diesel train on the Cherkasy – Taras Shevchenko rail route. In addition, the line is also used for rail freight transport.

The second project launched on August 2, 2021, includes the electrification works for the 94 km Kovel – Izov – Polish State Border railway line. Ukrainian Railways has received the relevant permission to start the main works from the State Architectural and Construction Inspectorate of Ukraine.

“The Kovel – Izov – Stat Border line is crucial for the development of rail transport in the direction of the European Union. The eectrification of this route will lay a solid foundation for increasing European transit cargo and economic development of our country,” Ivan Yuryk when visited a construction site along the line.

In addition, the introduction of electric traction in the section will also release 10 main locomotives, which will significantly reduce emissions by about 12,000 tonnes per year and will reduce the annual operating costs by UAH 136.4 million (EUR 4.3 million).

The electrification works started with the installation of the catenary at the Ustyluh station, the modernisation of rail sections, and cable network installation at the Lubliniec-Volynskyi station.

During this first phase of the electrification, the works cover the reconstruction of the catenary system, turnouts’ equipment, electric heating systems, the modernisation of railway crossings and the reconstruction of the signalling and communication system.

In addition, more than 11 km of tracks will be reconstructed, over 13 km of tracks will be overhauled along the line. The project also covers the repair of six platforms and 18 office buildings.

Due to the electrification, the line will provide increased capacity for freight trains and will reduce the delivery time. Currently, the trains run on electrified tracks to the Kovel station, and then the cargo is transported by diesel trains in the direction of Kovel – Izov – Goskordon, which is the most expensive part of this route. The line ensures the iron ore export from the Kryvyi Rih region to metallurgical companies in Poland. The Kryvyi Rih Iron Ore Plant (KZHRK) is the largest producer of iron ore in Ukraine and most of its production volume is exported to Eastern Europe. Plant’s reserves amount to 210 million tonnes of iron ore.

Thanks to the electrification of three rail lines – Kovel – Izov – Polish State Border line, Dolynska – Mykolayiv and Cherkasy – T. Shevchenko, Ukraine starts a large programme on the modernisation and electrification of it rail network. “All these projects are designed to reduce emissions and reduce operating costs. In particular, the electrification of the Cherkasy section – T. Shevchenko will significantly improve rail passenger service in the region and relieve the road traffic. This is an important project for the region and the whole of Ukraine,” Ivan Yuryk explained.

Ukrzaliznytsia will receive the first two of 100 passenger railcars by August 24 from Kryukiv Railway Car Building Works (KVBZ) under the contract signed in June 2021. This batch of cars is acquired by the support from the state budget.

The KVBZ will soon start the mass production to deliver the remaining coaches by 2022. This year the plant will supply at least 10 units and the railway company has already transferred an advanced payment to the plant.

“We are in constant dialogue with the plant, and I am confident that all differences and disputes will be resolved. Our common goal is new, comfortable and modern passenger railcars. Everyone will be able to see the first two cars at the exhibition of rolling stock, which will be held on August 27 at the Central Railway Station in Kyiv,” said Alexander Kamyshin, the Acting Chairman of the Board of Ukrzaliznytsia, during a visit to the plant together with the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine, Oleksandr Kubrakov.

The new coaches are equipped with an adaptive air conditioning system, USB sockets, a video surveillance system, etc.

Under the contract, KVBZ will design, build, and deliver 51 railcars with four-berth compartments, 12 with two-berth compartments, and 37 coaches with facilities for passengers with reduced mobility.

The government intends deliver a financing of UAH 40.4 billion (EUR 1.3 billion) to support the company’s rolling stock renewal programme within the next three years. For 2021 the budget of Ukraine provides UAH 3 billion (EUR 95.7 million) for the renewal of passenger trains and railcars. In 2022, the government may provide UAH 16 billion (EUR 510.3 million) and in 2023, UAH 21 billion (EUR 669.8 million) are expected to come from the state budget for the projects which covers the purchase of new trains and railcars.

Following this latest railcar procurement, until 2023 Ukrzaliznytsia would acquire around 570 new coaches, 18 suburban diesel trains, 43 suburban electric trains and five new high-speed trains.
