Tbilisi City Hall held a meeting with representatives of GT Group LLC, the company that won the tender for purchasing modern metro carriages, Tbilisi City Hall reported.
Tbilisi Vice Mayor Giorgi Tkemaladze and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Georgia, Zhou Qian attended the meeting.
Following the meeting, a formal agreement was signed. Vice Mayor Tkemaladze emphasized that this project represents a major step toward improving safe and comfortable transportation for Tbilisi residents.
“Developing public transport is one of our key priorities. Over the years, we have modernized the metro, rehabilitated stations, and repaired metro carriages. Now, we are entering a new phase—acquiring European-standard metro carriages. Over the next five years, 111 new carriages will be delivered, providing safer and more comfortable travel for our citizens,” Tkemaladze said.
Under the agreement, GT Group, in cooperation with CRRC Corporation Ltd.—one of the world’s largest metro train manufacturers—will supply 111 carriages, forming 25 trains in total: 14 trains with 4 carriages each and 11 trains with 5 carriages each.
On the Akhmeteli Theatre–Varketili line, 5-carriage trains will replace the current 4-carriage units, increasing capacity and enhancing service quality. The tender was supported by Tbilisi City Hall, the central government, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). The total project cost is €150 million (excluding VAT).
Although all existing metro trains have undergone various levels of rehabilitation in recent years, many are nearing the end of their service life. Replacing them with new, modern units is essential.
Currently, Tbilisi’s metro system operates 48 trains (192 carriages). The upgrade and expansion of the fleet will continue in the coming years.
