Škoda trolleybuses with SOR body heading to Germany for the first time
Škoda Electric has succeeded in the tender for the supply of new trolleybuses in Germany for the first time. In the repeated competition for the supply of new trolleybuses for Esslingen, it defeated Solaris Bus & Coach and HESS. It will build the vehicles itself on the SOR TNS model platform, i.e. as the Škoda 32 and 33 Tr types.
The tender for the supply of initially 46 partial trolleybuses for Esslingen, which currently operates only 10 trolleybuses, was announced and closed in 2022, when the winner was the Belgian Van Hool, which was to supply its very first trolleybuses built on the A-series platform. However, in the spring of 2024, Van Hool ended up in insolvency and eventually went bankrupt without being able to deliver even a single vehicle, while the order for Van Hool had meanwhile grown to 52 vehicles.
Despite the bad experience, Esslingen decided not to change its strategy for electrifying public transport using partial trolleybuses and on 23 December 2024 announced a new competition, in which it made several changes compared to the original one, which, among other things, facilitated the participation of Škoda with SOR (the original assignment from 2022, for example, did not allow the delivery of vehicles with a length of 18.75 m, which excluded the participation of TNS series vehicles, but the contracting authority was now trying to achieve – given the market situation – the widest possible range of participants).

On the way to emission-free transport
The Škoda Group will deliver a total of 52 new trolleybuses to the city of Esslingen by the end of 2026. At the same time, the city of Esslingen is expanding its overhead line network for urban bus transport. It will receive funding of €27.4 million for this purpose, making it one of the first cities in Germany with emission-free local public transport.
The city of Esslingen is investing a total of around €41.5 million in the acquisition of the new trolleybuses. The renewed contract was necessitated by the insolvency of the Belgian bus manufacturer Van Hool, from whom the city had already ordered new trolleybuses in 2022. "Since energy and raw material prices have since recovered somewhat, Skoda's offer is even more favorable than the original order from Van Hool,” explains Johannes Müller, Technical Plant Manager of the Esslingen Municipal Transport Authority (SVE).
The first planning discussions with Skoda Electric have already been scheduled for the coming weeks to clarify the technical details. In just over a year, probably in summer 2026, the SVE expects the first buses to be delivered. Around five to six more are then to follow each week, so the contract will be completed by the end of 2026.
