Szeged este al patrulea oraș ca mărime din Ungaria, capitala comitatului Csongrád. Orașul are în jur de 163.000 de locuitori (2005).
După încheierea primul război mondial, Ungaria a pierdut o mare parte din teritoriul în favoarea României, moment în care Seghedinul a devenit un oraș foarte apropriat de graniță, iar importanța sa a scăzut. Totuși, preluând rolurile fostelor orașe maghiare, s-a recuperat repede. Universitatea din Cluj a fost mutată la Seghedin în (v. Universitatea Seghedin). În 1923, Seghedinul a preluat rolul de scaun episcopal al Timișoarei.

Seghedinul este situat în Europa Centrală, în apropierea graniței din partea de SE a Ungariei, pe ambele maluri ale râului Tisa, la sud de confluența acestuia cu Mureșul.
Clima este temperată cu veri însorite, temperaturi ce variază între 25 și 35 °C, și ierni blânde. Temperatura medie anuală este de 11 °C.

Szeged would rent old trolleys from Budapest

Thirty-five-year-old Ikarus may appear in Szeged soon. But according to the promise of the local transport company, only temporarily.

The Szegedi Közlekedési Kft. (SZKT) admitted to Szegeder's questions that they are thinking about renting the old Budapest Ikarus trolleys. The paper says that Szeged has already ordered new SOR trolleys, but until they arrive, the existing Skoda trolleys must be replaced with something.

According to the SZKT, some of the Skodas can no longer be economically repaired, so they would take the Ikarus, which used to run in Budapest, as replacement articulated vehicles. The good-looking Ikarus 280 trolleys are "only" around 35 years old, but the Skodas from Szeged are not much better either: none of them are younger than thirty. The Ikarus are also more economical, as they have brake energy recovery technology. In terms of passenger comfort, both are roughly the same.

BKV wrote to the newspaper that the contract between the two transport companies "is currently being finalized in connection with the rental of GVM type trolleybuses". The first 18m Trollino from Salzburg has arrived in Szeged

It appears that an agreement has been reached between Salzburg AG and SZKT for the purchase of four articulated Solaris Trollino 18AC trolleybuses manufactured in 2005, as the first member of the series with track numbers 316-319, which previously served in the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds and then in Salzburg, car number 316, which recently suffered minor fire damage, has arrived in Szeged. The transport company intends to use these vehicles – which it acquired at a very favorable price – to replace the Škoda 15Tr trolleybuses that were discontinued due to corrosion problems.

Of the four Salzburg trolleybuses, only two are currently operational. The plan is to put at least two of the operational ones into service, but it is not excluded that a third and fourth will also be put into service in the future. The trolleybuses will also be equipped with air conditioning, only after which they will be ready for service next year.

The SZKT also plans to purchase additional articulated trolleybuses. The company has selected the remaining 12 articulated trolleybuses from the recently decommissioned Tallinn trolleybus fleet of 38, originally consisting of 14 single-axle and 14 articulated trolleybuses, purchased between 2007 and 2010. These will be sold by the Estonians at auction, the outcome of which will determine where the vehicles will end up. These trolleybuses are not in as good condition as the Salzburg trolleybuses, so if the deal goes through, they will need a major overhaul. Magyarbusz [Info]
