The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) awarded Alstom a EUR 876 million contract for the supply of 55 nine-car Metropolis trains including an 8-year maintenance contract. The new trains will operate the upgraded Cairo Metro Line 1. The contract is funded by the French Government.

The train’s interior layout is tailored to the specific requirements of the line and designed to maximise train capacity while enhancing comfort, accessibility and passenger flow. It features wide corridors and a dedicated women’s area.

At peak times, each train will be able to carry 2,580 passengers and its eco-design brings increased energy-efficiency and is up to 98% recyclable. Alstom’s proposal includes a unique design to reflect the history and culture of Cairo.

The new trains will benefit incorporated digital solutions which will allow real-time passenger information, dynamic route maps, video displays and video surveillance. Alstom will also install its HealthHub, a condition-based and predictive maintenance solution. Through enhanced data collection, the system optimises the lifecycle costs and saves up to 20% in preventive maintenance labour and 15% in materials consumption.

Train design for Cairo Line 1
Maintenance work will be carried out at the depot in Cairo and managed locally, creating long-term local job opportunities. A training and development plan will be rolled out in partnership with the Egyptian Company for Metros (ECM), the operator and maintainer of Line 1.

The contract follows an agreement signed in June by Bruno Le Maire, the French Minister of the Economy, Finance and the Recovery, and Kamel El-Wazir, the Egyptian Minister of Transport, concerning the financing of this agreement and of the maintenance contract, for the development of the Cairo metro.

Cairo Metro Line 1, the oldest metro line in Egypt, was inaugurated in 1984. The 42.5 km long with 33 station is carrying 2.5 million passengers per day between El Marg and Helwan. The modernisation project received EUR 205 million funding from the EBRD, EUR 350 million provided by the EIB and a EUR 50 million loan from Agence Française de Développement. The city will also modernise the 23-km Line 2 which needs a EUR 240 million investment and is supported by the EIB.

In Cairo, Alstom is also implementing a contract to develop city’s public transport. As part of a consortium with Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors, a EUR 4.1 billion contract signed in 2019 for the construction of two monorail lines. Under the contract, Alstom will deliver Innovia Monorail 300 technology. The first two 4-car monorail trains were delivered in September.

The Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) awarded CAF a train refurbishment contract for Cairo Line 1. Under the EUR 180 million contract, the Spanish company will modernise 23 metro trains running on Cairo metro Line 1. The contract will be financed with Spanish funds from the FIEM (Enterprise Internationalisation Fund).

The project will be completed in partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation as is the manufacturer of the trains. Mitsubishi has also signed a memorandum of understanding with CAF and NAT for the future refurbishment of the Japanese trains that currently provide transport service on the Line 2.

The train refurbishment project also involves the maintenance of the units for a term of two years.

The trains will be refurbished at the NAT facilities in Kozzika, a newly built depot connected to the Cairo Metro Line 1. This will also be fitted out by CAF as part of the scope of this contract for this refurbishment work and subsequent train maintenance.

The scope of the work which will be performed on the units will include upgrading the main systems and items associated with train availability and safety, including the traction system under CAF Power and Automation integration, as well as improving other areas which are more concerned with unit aesthetics and passenger comfort, with this including the installation of air-conditioning equipment on the units.

Cairo is implementing programmes and projects to modernise its public transport system, particularly the metro system. In this context, NAT and Alstom signed a EUR 876 million contract for the supply of 55 metro trains which will enter operation on the Line 1. In addition, the French company has delivered the first two 4-car trains for city’s monorail project covering two lines which are expected to be opened in 2023. 70 Innovia 300 monorail trains will operate the new transport system.

The Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) signed a contract with Mitsubishi Corporation and Kinki Sharyo to deliver 184 metro cars for the Phase 1 of Cairo Metro Line 4. The total amount under this contract, in which MC shall serve as the prime contractor, is approximately PJY 40 billion (USD 350.14 million).

Under the terms of the contract, Mitsubishi will oversee the project’s schedule and day-to-day operations and Kinki Sharyo will supply the rolling stock.

The metro cars supplied by Kinki Sharyo will be manufactured mainly with Japanese components and delivered in stages, beginning in 2025 and concluding in 2028.

Funded through ODA loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Phase 1 of Cairo Metro Line 4 project including New CP412 will be expected to take advantage of advanced railway technologies developed in Japan.

In November 2020, a JPY 90 billion (USD 787.8 million) contract was signed with the Egyptian government for the delivery of the railway systems, track and depot works package (CP411) for Phase 1. The contract was awarded to a consortium comprising Mitsubishi Corporation and Orascom Construction. MC will supply the equipment necessary to build the railway systems and be responsible for related administrative work, while Orascom will handle the project’s civil engineering work and construction of the train operation control center and other facilities.

Both contracts are yen-loan projects in Egypt under JICA’s STEP (Special Terms for Economic Partnership) programme.

The first phase of Cairo Metro Line 4 will be 19 km-long served by 16 stations which will link central Cairo to the Giza Pyramid Complex in Southwest Greater Cairo.

Not only is Line 4 expected to help ease Greater Cairo’s traffic congestion. The city is expanding and develops its metro system and the rolling stock.

Recently, a EUR 180 million contract was signed with CAF for the modernisation of metro trains running on the Line 1. This project will be implemented with Mitsubishi as is the manufacturer of the existing fleet.

In addition, NAT has also awarded Alstom a EUR 876 million contract to supply 495 metro cars forming a fleet of 55 nine-car trains.
