The CAF Group has secured two contracts in Germany, further attesting to its commitment to the country, where the group is currently supplying electric units to operator Schönbuchbahn.

Together the new contracts value almost 200m euros (237.06m USD).

The first contract is to supply 51 LRV units, along with all relevant spare parts, to Ruhrbahn GmbH between 2024 and 2026.

The new units will be bi-directional, low-floor, 28-metre-long vehicles. Passenger capacity will be a minimum of 173 passengers, including two multipurpose areas for wheelchairs or prams. For enhanced safety, the units will be fitted with a driver assistance system and rear-view cameras instead of the usual mirrors.

The vehicles will run on the tram network that services and connects the cities of Essen and Mülheim. This network currently spans 155km, serving as the transport backbone for the entire metropolitan area.

The second contract is with VAG Freiburg, the organisation responsible for the operation of the Freiburg tram system. CAF will supply eight trams – this is in addition to the 17 Urbos trams it previously supplied, and which are currently in service.

These new units will replace the GT8N vehicles that have been running since the early 1990s, providing improved accessibility and greater capacity.

Re: Germania - generalitati PTMZ

Siemens Mobility and ViP Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam successfully demonstrated a test of the Autonomous Tram in Depot (AStriD- from the German for “Autonomous Tramway in Depot”) research project, and it is expected that the technology will be market-ready in 2026.

“Autonomous driving along the tram route and within the depot relieves our drivers and increases the safety of our passengers and other road users,” Uwe Loeschmann, CEO of ViP Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam GmbH, said.

A consortium consisting of Siemens Mobility, ViP Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam GmbH, the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT), the Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM), and Codewerk GmbH began its joint research on a fully automated tram depot in October 2019.

“AStriD is an important milestone on the way to achieving self-driving trams. Working with our partners, we are using valuable synergies to digitalize the depot and reduce time-consuming on-site shunting. By automating the depot, we can better support our customers in ensuring sustainable value growth over the entire lifecycle and guaranteeing the availability of their trams,” Albrecht Neumann, CEO Rolling Stock of Siemens Mobility said.

The research and development project is being implemented at the depot operated by Verkehrsbetriebs Potsdam.

At the InnoTrans 2018, Siemens Mobility and Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam demonstrated a test tram operating under real road conditions on a section of Potsdam’s tram network. In October 2019 the research project has been launched in Potsdam.

The project that resulted from this initiative aims at developing a digital depot on the basis of self-driving trams.

The technical feasibility of the concept will be demonstrated with autonomous service functions, such as moving a tram through a washing facility to a siding. Making depot automation commercially viable is thus a first stage of introducing autonomous driving.

Under the Autonomous Tram in Depot project, the consortium partners are responsible for  different works.

Siemens Mobility is developing the self-driving tram in the depot and the yard management system (YMS) that gives the tram its driving orders. In addition, it is working with project partner KIT to develop the digital map that is the basis for tracking the tram’s location within the depot.

ViP Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam GmbH is providing the tram and the depot infrastructure, enabling access to all required data, systems, and facilities, and evaluating the project’s findings from the perspective of a depot operator.

The KIT Institute for Information Processing Technology (ITIV) is contributing its expertise in the specification and digitalisation of depots, the automation of processes, and identifying the necessary data, and is supporting the development of the digital map.

IKEM is analysing and evaluating the legal and economic issues related to the project while Codewerk is supporting the communication between the tram and control center and is responsible for integrating parts of the depot infrastructure.

The three-year project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure as part of its Modernity Fund (mFUND).

Re: Germania - generalitati PTMZ

The European Investment Bank would provide a EUR 70 million loan to the city of Chemnitz for the procurement of a tram-train fleet of 19 units and the construction of a depot for up to 60 trains. Currently, the EUR 148 million project is under bank’s appraisal.

At the end of 2020, the Mid Saxony Transport Authority (VMS) has launched a tender for the acquisition of up to 46 tram-trains with an initial order for 19 vehicles which will operate around Chemnitz and its surrounding areas. The first two prototypes are expected to be delivered by the end of 2027 and the remaining tram-train batch are scheduled to be supplied by the end of 2025.

An option for more than 27 tram-trains must be exercised by 2035, with a base order for 17 vehicles. The remaining 10 units must be compatible with the vehicles from the base order.

The winner of the tender will be responsible for the design, manufacture, deliver and authorisation of the vehicles and it will also ensure the corrective and preventive maintenance for a period of 16 years with a possibility for an 8–year extension. These activities will be performed at the facilities owned by the VMS.

The dual-voltage tram-trains will be 37.5 metre-long providing more than 80 seats and multi-purpose areas for passenger with reduced mobility, wheelchairs, prams and bicycles.
The new trains will be put into operation on the Chemnitzer Modell network which will be expanded by 17 km, with an initial extension of 2.3 km for which a consultancy tender has been launched. The construction would start in 2025 and is expected to enter passenger operation in 2027.

The entire extension will provide the connection between the city centre and Limbach-Oberfrohna district, situated in the northwest. In April 2021, the city has started the preliminary planning for the first approval on the construction of the Chemnitz-City – Limbach-Oberfrohna rail connection.
The first planning approval section includes Falkeplatz, Theaterstrasse and Brückenstrasse, closing the centre rail ring. Part of the first plan approval section also includes the Hartmannstrasse branch from the Gleisdreieck to the Ermafa-Passage.
The project is estimated at EUR 120 million and the five section which will form the extension is expected to be constructed starting 2025.

Re: Germania - generalitati PTMZ

Six transport companies from Germany and Austria awarded Stadler a EUR 4 billion contract to deliver 504 vehicles as part of the VDV Tram-Train project. The firm order covers the supply of 246 CityLink tram-trains with a total value of EUR 1.7 billion which will be manufactured in the next ten years.

The agreement includes an option for up to 258 additional vehicles as well the delivery of maintenance services for a period of 32 years.

The award of the contract marks the beginning of the partnership between Stadler and the project consortium, consisting of Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe (VBK), Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG), Saarbahn Netz, Schiene Oberösterreich, the State of Salzburg and Zweckverband Regional-Stadtbahn Neckar-Alb.

The delivery schedule:
• The first four vehicles will be delivered to the Saarbahn in 2024 and from 2025 it will also receive a further 24 tram train fleet with an option for 21 additional vehicles to replace the existing rolling stock;
• From 2025, Stadler will deliver its firmly ordered 75 tram trains to AVG, which will be able to order 73 additional vehicles;
• Starting 2026, VBK will receive 73 tram-trains, with an option for further 52 vehicles;
• Also in 2026, Schiene Oberösterreich will receive a total fleet of 20 vehicles, which are initially intended to replace and strengthen the existing vehicle fleet operating the rail networks in the Upper Austria.The option for 50 additional tram trains applies to the Linz city regional railway system;
• A total of 20 vehicles with an option for a further 5 trains will go to Salzburg from 2026 and will replace older vehicles;
• In 2027, the first of a total of 30 vehicles with up to 57 more vehicles as an option will go to the Neckar-Alb region.
All vehicles will be supplied in a three-part design. The length of the vehicles, the number of doors, the boarding and coupling height as well as the configuration of the CityLink versions will vary depending on the delivery location and the customer.

All the tram-trains will have certain features in common which includes the HVAC system for the passenger compartments and driver’s cab, and spacious multi-purpose areas with two wheelchair spaces that can be flexibly configured. The tram-trains will be individually equipped to suit the place of use. For example, the vehicles for the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft will have a toilet as well as facilities for cycle racks, while Schiene Oberösterreich has opted for luggage racks as an extra feature.

The CityLink can operate the cities tram network and can also be used as an inter-city train if configured accordingly.

Providing one type of vehicle for six operators is unusual. “On the project team, we spent hours developing a common set of specifications. We defined a standard with up to five further versions to meet the operator-specific requirements such as boarding height, coating and place of use,” said the overall project manager Thorsten Erlenkötter from Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe.

Under the VDV-Tram-Train project, Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe is in charge of the overall project management and, following the tendering phase, is now also coordinating the implementation of the project. “A procurement concept like the one we have implemented here is unique worldwide to date. The six operators are united by their belief in the concept of tram-trains that can link large cities with their respective regions according to the Karlsruhe model and that can bring people directly into the centre quickly without having to change trains,” Christian Höglmeier, the technical managing director of VBK said.

The six companies issued the tender in August 2020 following the announcement they made in 2019 related to the common approach for the procurement of the vehicles.
